"Kapehu Wailele" is Hawaiian for "swollen stream of tumbling waters."
That's the full name for this heavenly 20 acre estate.
It's named for the Kapehu Stream with its many waterfalls, flowing next to the house. [By the way, Kapehu is pronounced "kah PEHhoo."]
You can hear the tumbling waters from the bedrooms of the large main house, where the gentle sounds will sing you to sleep.
There is also a separate Creekside Cottage just above a small creek that crosses the estate. From the cottage windows you also hear flowing waters.
So every spot on the property is immersed in soothing sounds of flowing waters, breezes through the trees, and tropical birds.
The Kapehu Retreat House is a serene and restorative setting for personal spiritual journeys and small group spiritual retreats. From the moment you arrive, you can feel the mana (see "mana" on the Hawaiian words page).
For your family vacations, the location is a perfect base from which to explore the entire island. All the spectacular waterfalls and scenic canyons, as well as Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, zip lines, and numerous beaches, are close by. (See "area attractions.") Even Kona on the opposite side of the island is less than 2 hours away, and the drive is lovely.
Actually, Kapehu is such a beautiful place to kick back and relax, sometimes our visitors prefer to skip the sight-seeing and stay home:
You can re-connect with Mother Nature in this lush garden setting. Meditate beside our private waterfall. Enjoy the beauty of the puas (flowers). Wade in the creek.
This exotic sanctuary is easy to get to: 15 minutes from downtown Hilo, 20 minutes from the airport.
Leave the city behind with each breath of pure sweet air (freer from vog than anywhere else on the island). Let yourself be soothed by those "gentle trade winds" that lyricists have sung about for centuries.

Can you see all the stars in the sky where you live? If not, you will be amazed at what you can see in the night sky when there are no city lights to interfere.
Help yourself to fresh fruit growing on the property: papayas, bananas, lilikoi, lemons, limes, grapefruit, oranges, rambutan, avocados, pineapples . . .
From our driveway you can see 13,796-ft Mauna Kea topped by snow and telescopes.
Welcome home . . .
